Unforgettable first

Freshman Travis Motsis scored his first varsity goal, which proved to be the game-winning in Whittier-Amesbury's 3-2 win over Pentucket-Georgetown. Freshman Tabor Smith assisted on the goal along with junior Tucker Holt, who earned his first varsity point with that helper. Junior Evan King (18 saves) withstood a late Pentucket enslaught to secure the win.

Knights ice Sachems in opener

North Andover beat Pentucket-Georgetown 5-1 in the season opener for both. The Sachems tied it early but Knights’ tri-captain Mike Cusack scored 11 seconds later. Ryan Sweeney scored twice and the other North Andover goals were by Derek Hunter (shorthanded) and Ricky O’Connor. Ian Mitchell scored for the Sachems.

Improbable Hornet upset

North Reading entered with a 3-6-1 record and Newburyport was 7-1. But when the dust settled, the Hornets stunned the Clippers, 2-1, on two Cody Carbone goals. Freshman goalie Keith Linnane turned aside 21 shots. It was the first time in recent memory that North Reading had beaten Newburyport. Nobody on the team had done it and assistant coach Brian McAuliffe added he had never beaten them in his four years either.
