North Reading's Capezzuto shows his versatility at CAL Open

Capezzuto sweeps dashes North Reading’s Nick Capezzuto, who normally runs the 200 and 800 meters, pulled off a double in the dashes, winning the 100 in 11.44 and the 200 in 22.71. “I ran a (personal best) in the (100) preliminaries in 11.36, so this was my second best electronic time,” said Capezzuto, who will attend Stonehill next year. “I honestly thought it was going to be cold. I wasn’t expecting the heat or the sun at all. I was just expecting to run fast, not necessarily win. I just wanted to knock off a good time.” Considering it was one of the few times Capezzuto had attempted the distance, it was a more than acceptable time. “I ran the 100 I think three other times before this,” said Capezzuto, who did not run the 800 yesterday. “It started with me moving to the 800 and 200 but since the 200 comes right after the 800, they moved me to the 100 and 800. That’s how I discovered I could run the 100. “I didn’t run (the 800) because I don’t want to have two days of hard running in (a six-day stretch). I’m going to run it Friday. But I love the 800. It’s a good pain. You have to train and you have to want that pain.” Triton won the boys division with 109 points followed by Newburyport with 102 and North Andover with 68. The only other area champion was North Andover’s Eric Riedel, who won the triple jump with a 43-5. “It’s the first time we’ve had good weather all season,” Riedel, a junior, said. “I just came off a hamstring injury and didn’t come back until Tuesday (against Masconomet). It still hurts me, but it wasn’t affecting me that much.”
