METHUEN - It was a tough night for Methuen girls soccer, losing a double-overtime heartbreaker to Medford 2-1 in the first round of the Division 1 North playoffs.

Jessica Cutler had the Rangers lone goal on an assist from Lindsay Saad, and Megan Langlois made seven saves in net.

Kiana Bueno got up to make an impressive 7.5 blocks and also led Haverhill with 13 kills as the Hillies beat Medford 3-1 (25-15, 25-13, 23-25, 25-8). Abby Tracy and Mary Rose Steed each had 5 aces, and Steed also added 19 digs. 

EDFORD — By the time Medford ran its first play for positive yardage, Haverhill was up three scores.

Grant Chesky scored three minutes into sudden death and Haverhill downed Medford 13-12. Chesky had four goals and Jason Tufts, Patrick Fitzgibbons and Nick Munoz added two each.

Jacob Wallace, who may be the hottest pitcher in the region, fired a two-hitter with two walks and 14 strikeouts as Methuen whipped Medford 7-0. Jacob Thibault had three hits and two RBI and Owen Foote drove in two runs. Wallace helped himself with two hits and two runs.

Methuen's girls basketball team outscored Medford 12-6 in the fourth quarter on its way to a 54-46 victory. Akemma Chibuogwu led three players in double figures with 13 points.

Zach Martino scored two goals and assisted on two others as North Andover cruised past Medford 5-2. Matt Bosco added two goals and Dana Rodrigues capped off the scoring.

Nicole Langlois and Jelke Meyer each scored twice and No. 7 Methuen beat No. 10 Medford 5-0 in the Division 1 North girls soccer first round. The Rangers travel on to face No. 2 Masconomet on Sunday at 2 p.m.
