Masco hands Pentucket first CAL loss

BOXFORD — Masconomet has been on the wrong side of a number of tough battles this season. Of the Chieftains’ five losses, four were on blown second-half leads — including one to Pentucket which Masco wanted to avenge Friday night.
The Chieftains found a way to slam the door shut on one Eastern Mass’s best squads, beating the Sachems 56-43 to improve to 15-5. They were powered by 19- and 17-point efforts from junior Makayla Graves and sophomore Morgan Bovardi.
It was the first Cape Ann League loss for Pentucket (17-3 overall) and Masco’s first win in the rivalry since January of 2016.
“They are so tough,” Romeo said of Pentucket. “They play solid team defense and make you earn every shot you make ... we just found a way to make more shots than they did.”
Masconomet trailed by as many as 10 points in the second quarter but cut Pentucket’s lead to 21-18 at the half.
Masconomet took its first lead in the third quarter after Bovardi hit one of her four three-pointers and never looked back.
Angelina Yacubacci (16 points, 3 3-pointers) and Angelica Hurley (15 with 2 treys) combined for 31 of the Sachem points.
