CHARLEMONT — As a skiing purist, Jerry Marchegiani was floored by the perfomance Tuesday by Jason Denoncourt.
The Andover High senior won both the slalom (36.27) and the giant slalom (37.53) at the Mass. State Meet at Berkshire East. There were about 150 competitors in both events, which were pushed back a week due to poor conditions.
Marchegiani, the legendary 42nd-year North Andover High ski coach, said, "Jason's performance was a blue-moon performance. It only comes around so often. Only 1-2 have ever done it probably in the history of the meet. It's extremely rare."
When asked why it was so rare, Marchegiani said, "The Slalom is such a different event. It's like winning the javein and triple jump in track. It's like night and day. It's quite an accomplishment."
Last year Denoncourt won the giant slalom and grabbed second in the slalom.
Denoncourt could become a three-time Eagle-Tribune MVP. The only other person in the 26-year history of the award to do that is Masconomet's Caitlin Carey, who did it four straight (1996-99).
