Jim Savelyev was denied a goal minutes before on an offsides call, but he pressed on and knocked home the game-winner with 13 minutes to go as No. 14 Georgetown trimmed No. 10 St. Mary’s of Lynn, 2-1.

The Royals advanced to the Division 3 North final for the first time since 1989. On Saturday, they will play No. 4 Hamilton-Wenham, which beat the Royals, 1-0, in the regular season.

Kyle McKay scored the other Georgetown goal midway through the second half on a high-arcing 30-yard shot.

St. Mary’s had a golden opportunity to score the equalizer with about five minutes left but a hustling Bryant Yavorski booted the ball away.

Evan Weagle had 12 saves as the Royals, who were just 7-7-4 in the regular season, improved to 9-7-4.

"He played his angles perfectly," said eighth-year Royals coach Ron Comeau. The coach also saluted the play of stopper

Dean Nemeroff ("he played a fantastic game" and midfielder Brent Larson ("he really stepped up his game.")

The Royals advanced to the North final for the first time since 1989, when they lost to Marblehead.

"We’re in new territory," said Comeau.

Indeed, from 1991-2007, the Royals had only won one tourney game (2004 first round).
