Don't expect a letdown from 7-0 Masconomet tonight at home (7 p.m.) even though the matchup with 2-4 Amesbury is meaningless on paper. Masconomet's goal, of course, is to win the Cape Ann League Large division and the Chieftains wrap up the season with divisional contests against Pentucket, Triton and North Andover. Amesbury is in the CAL Small division, so Masco could afford a loss, so to speak.
"Well, it's Homecoming Week for us, so I don't think we'll be taking it easy," said Masco coach Jim Pugh. "And we keep saying we want to get better each week. I think we're going to have our hands full with Amesbury. That's the approach we're going to take."
Masco has piled up 76 points in its last two games against Ipswich and Lawrence and the offense has looked outstanding all year, but the Chieftains have been solid on defense, too. Pugh mentioned that Masco has been effective against the pass while rotating Steve Sylvia, Kevin Anderson, Chris Splinter, Evan Bunker and Dom Bavaro in the secondary.
"We'll be ready for Amesbury," said Pugh. "We play only 11 games. You don't take a game off at any stage of the season."
