ANDOVER — With its epic matchup with archrival Phillips Exeter on the horizon, Phillips Academy warmed up in a big way yesterday.

Behind another stellar game by back Clay Cleveland, and Andover's Mike Bernieri turning in huge plays on defense, the Big Blue cruised to a 47-12 win over Worcester Academy.

"We ran very well," said Phillips coach Leon Modeste. "They wanted to take away our outside game, but after we saw this we were still able to run the ball well. (Boston College-bound offensive lineman Bob) Vardaro was leading the way."

Cleveland needed just 17 carries to rack up 136 yards and a touchdown of 14 yards. He also caught a 29-yard touchdown from QB  Andrew Vailas. The Big Blue finished with 332 rushing yards as a team on 48 carries.

Bernieri was in the face of the Worcester QB all day, sacking him twice and intercepting another pass. Vardaro added seven tackles and Steve Koenig had two sacks and finished with four tackles.

"We kept keeping pressure on them and kept them from breaking that one big one," said Modeste.
