NEW HAVEN — Despite suffering a major disappointment, Timberlane took the lead after the first day of the New England wrestling tournament at Hill House High School last night.

Thanks to a tournament-best seven wrestlers qualifying for this morning's quarterfinal round, the Owls lead with 35 points, followed by New Hampshire rival Pinkerton in second with 27 points and Warwick, R.I., third with 24 1/2. Methuen, with three quarterfinalists, is in seventh with 13 1/2 points.

The disappointment for the Owls came at 135 when two-time New England placer Matt Morris, leading 14-3, got pinned in the third period, sending him to the consolation bracket.

But Zach Bridson (112), Adam Corey (119), Andrew Tanner (145), Nate Lawrence (160), Nick Lawrence (171), Shane Tremblay (189) and Ben Tammany (285) all advanced. Tanner survived a 1-0 decision in his match.

Another close match, but a satisfying one, was at 171 as Lawrence's Juan Rodriguez advanced with a 7-5 decision over Winnacunnet's Matt Sullivan, avenging a loss to him earlier in the season.

Methuen All-State champs Christian Monserrat (103) and Paul Sughrue (119) as well as C.J. Doherty (145) all won their opening matches comfortably to advance to the quarterfinals.

Among the present surprises were a pair of wins at 112 by Salem's Jon Rheaume and a pin by Pinkerton junior Zach Daigle at 145.

The semifinals will be early this afternoon with the finals set to start about 7:30 p.m.
