BYFIELD — Being pressured by the Triton defense, North Andover quarterback Brandon Walsh scrambled back about 15 yards behind the line of scrimmage on a first-and-10 play from the Triton 16 yard line on the first play of the second quarter yesterday.

Walsh not only avoided being sacked with some slick moves, but he then planted his feet and tossed a perfect spiral into the end zone to a wide open Mike Weisman.

“He just doesn’t stop,” North Andover senior David Foote said about Walsh. “I thought the play was dead to be honest, but he just kept his feet moving and got set up and he just hucked it up and Wiesman was sitting there wide open. Touchdown. It was awesome.”

That play best exemplifies the entire game, as Walsh was unstoppable both running and throwing the football.
The junior completed 12 of 17 passes for 143 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for touchdowns of 24 and 62 yards as the Scarlet Knights routed Triton, 48-6, at Triton Regional High.

Walsh said the play to open up the second quarter was probably the most he has ever scrambled backward before actually completing a pass.

“That was pretty far back,” Walsh said. “I have no idea how far I went back. All I know is that there was a lot of good down-field blocking. ... The line broke down at first but they came back and they just kept throwing blocks and they gave me some more time and I just kind of threw it up there.”

Another impressive play by Walsh came on the Scarlet Knights’ second possession of the second quarter. Walsh connected with Foote for a 24-yard touchdown pass on a fourth-and-seven play.

“He’s improved a tremendous amount,” wide receiver Jon Swanton said about Walsh. “Last year he was good and all but this year he’s really grown into his shoes and he’s a great leader.”

Walsh really put the game away when he rushed in from 62 yards out on the second play of the third quarter. It put North Andover ahead 35-0.

“He’s growing up and maturing with the rest of them,” North Andover coach John Rafferty said about Walsh. “They are all in that same boat. Now that they are older and more mature, and as a result they are doing a better job and executing better.”
